Writer's Block: Ten for the Tenth

Some people spend their whole lives preparing the answer to this question: What albums are on your personal all-time Top 10 list?

View 501 Answers

1. Brian Eno - Another Green World

Father of ambient. This balances his art-rock phase with some early ambient experimentation.

2. Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians

Essential for any fan of minimalism.

3. Can - Ege Bamyasi

My token krautrock album pick. Vitamin C is catchy as all get-out. Tago Mago and Faust's So Far almost took this spot.

4. The Congos - Heart of the Congos

Well balanced Dub reggae album. LEE "SCRATCH" PERRY adds a lot in the way of really unique sonic touches.

5. King Crimson - Red

My favorite 70's prog record. Starless is one monster of a song.

6. Keith Green - No Compromise

Great "Jesus movement" gospel album by an artist I could never tire of.

7. David Bowie - Heroes

My favorite of the Berlin trilogy albums. Love every track.

8. 16 Horsepower - Low Estate

Kind of an oddball pick, but this one really speaks to me. Alternative southern gothic country. Makes me think of bell towers and gunslingers.

9. Gong - Camembert Electrique

It was between this and Caravan. This one is just too much fun. Whimsical Canterbury action.

10. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

Shameless prog favorite of mine. Gabriel was an incredibly charismatic front man.

pretentious overlong description
Transistor is a sample drenched, krautrock inspired romp through the more arcane aspects of recent human history. It's blissful 20 minute duration is drenched in the archaic sounds of rickety thrift shop organs, analog synthesizers, and tape trickery. Some tracks veer into full on art-rock, while others side with a more accessible indie sound. Listen if you enjoy artists like Neu!, Sparklehorse, or Brian Eno.

There's also a cover of Cash's Ring of Fire I decided to throw in for kicks.

track list
1 Magyar Hymn
2 End of the World
3 The Whistleblower
4 A Minute Away
5 Subterranean Nosedive
6 Ring of Fire
7 Our Lord

download links
Click to download the zip file!
Click to download the individual MP3s!

New game. I'm going for an ambient/minimalist feel here. I'm also programming a (mostly) generative music engine to go along with it. The mechanics are incredibly simple, the main objective of the game is to explore. The game world is massive and seamless.

There is a story, and I'm still throwing around the idea of having multiple endings. No attacks or weapons. You do have a sort of defense shield you can employ strategically in areas. There are obstacles and enemies, but you will never see the same one twice. I'm tired. :0)

New Orleans

Just returned from my trip to New Orleans on Saturday night. Went with my youth group to assist people who were affected by Katrina and participate in their annual Feed the Multitudes event. They aren't afraid to work you over there. Lots of construction related stuff.

As is usually the case when I go on these types of pilgrimages, I appreciate the work God is (and has always been) doing to a much greater degree. Also, there is nothing more humbling than giving a homeless person a pedicure.

I've so many things to say, but my eyelids are drooping so I'm going to save them for another entry.

welp, my album is almost done, just need to record a few more vocals and clean some stuff
it didn't end up very krautrocky save for a few tiny parts, it's kind of a mish mash of stuff
here are some things it has:

tons of household percussion sounds (vase, chopsticks, throwing pennies, banging on the wall, belt snapping, etc)
mellotron (tape strings/flute/choir)
shoegazey vocals and guitar work
a sax fugue
vocoder
an electric kazoo solo
a bunch of songs in 4/4 (what the heck!?)
tape delays that go on for a while and turn into a deep rumble and then a high pitched WEWEEEWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWW after a while
a few ambient tracks cause i've been listening to another green world a lot
an acapella part where i copy music for 18 musicians rather goofily

it's also my first vocal album without a concept woo woo
im probably going to sell it for like 5 dollars online and release the zip for free to people who ask me

Everything is going right in my life for once, but I hate it. I have zero time to devote to music and it's driving me insane. Every time I get ready to sit down and work on a song someone calls and there's another responsibility I have to take care of. Weekends are full of house work and errands.

I honestly feel like I'm suffocating. I almost want to quit the greatest career opportunity I've ever had and work night shift telemarketing again. It's been a month since I worked on a song. Two since I've worked on an art project. It's hard to express how terrible this feels.

I hate crybabies on the internet as much as the next guy, but I had to let it out.
